In this session, participants will examine the challenges of enhancing patients’ vision while they play sports and begin to explore how a sports vision optician must think differently from an everyday dispensing optician.
We will cover the needs presented by the condition elements (wind, water, sun, indoor lighting, protection, color), by speed, by visual range, and by differing focal length needs. We will explore the range of eyewear options to address those needs and expose participants to the deeper learning they will need to be able to tackle a sports vision subspecialty.
Attendees will leave this session being able to define unique visual needs of athletes and have perspective as they engage with vendors in the sports vision space as to what types of products they may need to have access to in their optical dispensaries.
As a self-described optical geek, Cira delights in sharing her love of all things eyecare and eyewear with other opticians in it shows! She has spent the last 19 years exploring many facets of the profession of opticianry working both in corporate and private practices, as a technician and an optician, in dispensing and production, as a buyer and as a vendor, and as both a team member and a manager. In 2022, she earned her ABOM: the Master in Ophthalmic Optics designation from the American Board of Opticianry; a designation granted to only a few hundred people in the country for their knowledge of ophthalmic optics, their willingness to be a continual learner and their desire to pass along this science and art to opticians everywhere.
She is an ABO certified Continuing Education speaker where she speaks on both state-level and national stages. In 2024 she was recognized by Vision Monday as a Rising Star among the Most Influential Women in Optical and as a Game Changer by Eyecare Business magazine.
